Having collected relevant seo information on your competitors, it stands to reason that if they failed to complete the necessary SEO steps discussed in seo information1, then you should most certainly do so to improve your Google PageRank and outrank them.
Bear in mind that no amount of on-page optimization will help you if your competitors' Google PageRank is above 5. It means they have a large number of inbound links pointing to their sites.
To outrank them you will not only have to better them with your on-page optimization, but off-page as well. However, assuming that their PageRank is 5 or less, you can beat them - your work begins with on-page optimization.
Your on-page search engine optimization should include the following:
- Keywords in your page title. Minimize the number of words (maximum 70 characters) and restrict them to your main keywords only. Too many words depreciate their value with Google and fewer words are given more weight. Limit repeated words and remove unnecessary words like “the”, “and”, etc.
For example, if your chosen keywords are:
- breeding conures
- raising conures
- caring for conures
then your page title could be "breeding | raising | caring for conures". The “|” character is produced by Shift + backslash character. The html code for this would be <title>breeding | raising | caring for conures</title>.
Additional SEO Tips
Make some of the keywords bolded, italicized and underlined - very sparingly or Google will treat it as spam.
To help you, the following seo informaton explains the functions of a few html tags:
- <strong> </strong> ... makes the text enclosed within, bold.
- <em> </em> ... makes the text enclosed within, italic.
- <u> </u> ... makes the text enclosed within, underlined.
- <h1> </h1> ... makes the text enclosed within, formatted as heading 1.
- <h2> </h2> ... makes the text enclosed within, formatted as heading 2.
- <title> </title> ... makes the text enclosed within, your web page title. This particular one does not appear within the body of your web page - only in the head section. The only time it is seen is when your website appears on a Google results page.

You should also include your keywords very lightly throughout the main content of your page. Do not overdo this or Google will treat it as keyword stuffing and penalize your PageRank. Keyword density can be about 1% - 2%.
NB Beginners can find the above html tags confusing (see "html tags" in sidebar Tips and illustration - seo-information1). Tags merely give instructions to web browsers - what to do or how to display web page information.
Again, for example, if you want the keyword “raising conures” made bold, you would encase it within opening and closing <strong> tags ie <strong>raising conures</strong>.
If you have decided to use an html editor such as Dreamweaver, the addition of the above html tags for SEO purposes would be covered in Dreamweaver tutorials. Otherwise there are excellent html tutorials to help you learn basic html language.
There’s another important piece of SEO information that will lend you much strength when it comes to increasing your Google PageRank – Anchor Text.

Tips ...
- A handy, free online tool for calculating your keyword density can be found at http://www.live-keyword-analysis.com. Just copy and paste in your keywords as well as your page content and the tool will do the rest.
- Write your web page content first. Then LATER, go back and add your keywords. They should be undetectable and flow naturally with the content.
- Long, difficult to use keyword phrases can be split up with full stops, commas or dashes. So part of the keyword phrase can begin a new sentence. Search engines recognize actual words and ignore punctuations.
Html editors like Dreamweaver automatically write the html tags in the background code for you.
You don't need to learn html, but a handy video tutorial showing you how to use Dreamweaver is invaluable.
Beware ...
of stopping with on-page seo optimization - it's only the start. Following this, acquiring inbound links to your site is an absolute must.
Submitting articles to article directories, adding comments on blogs are excellent ways of obtaining inbound links.
But, beware of link farms. Google is well aware of them and their purpose. You will not gain credit with Google with these, and in fact, may be penalized for using them.
